Rotary Airlock Valve Repair Guide

Rotary airlock valves work between storage, feeding and conveying equipment. When the valve begins to leak, jam, make abnormal noise or feed material unevenly, the cause is often related to wear, material buildup, seal condition, drive alignment or operating conditions.

Common signs that a rotary airlock valve needs inspection
- Unstable discharge or reduced feeding capacity
- Material leakage around the shaft or housing
- Rotor rubbing, jamming or difficult rotation
- Abnormal vibration or mechanical noise
- Increased air leakage in pneumatic conveying systems
- Material buildup inside the pockets or inlet area
- Motor overload or repeated drive protection

Check the material condition first
Before judging the valve itself, confirm whether the material has changed. Moisture, bridging, sticky powder, large particles or foreign objects can all cause feeding problems. Useful information includes material name, bulk density, particle size, moisture, required capacity, temperature and pressure difference.

Check wear and clearance
Wear between the rotor, housing and end covers can increase air leakage and reduce airlock performance. Typical areas to inspect include rotor blade edges, housing inner surface, side plates, end covers, shaft seals and bearings.

Check for jamming or rubbing
If the rotor cannot turn smoothly, stop operation and inspect the inlet, outlet and rotor pockets. Jamming may be caused by foreign objects, material buildup, oversized particles, thermal expansion or incorrect installation alignment.

When to consider rebuild or replacement
Repair may be suitable when the main structure is still usable and the issue is limited to wear parts, seals or drive components. Replacement may be more practical when the housing is severely worn, air leakage is difficult to control, or the valve no longer matches the process requirement.
